The toy swap subscription service from Visit from The Stork CIC
The affordable and more sustainable way to play
What is That Toy Thing?
That Toy Thing is a new toy sharing service from Visit from the Stork CIC, aiming to help families in Greater Manchester & the UK to play more sustainably , save money and reduce plastic waste and clutter. We are delighted to have been funded by The National Lottery Community Fund to support 100 families over the next 2 years with a 6 month toy swap subscription – launching on 1st December 2021.
That Toy Thing comes from a desire to save and reuse the staggering amount of toys that go to waste every year, whilst ensuring children can thrive by having access to the toys they need to aid development & skills when they might otherwise have gone without. We want to change the way you play and make it ethical, sustainable and affordable for everyone.
How it works
We collect Pre-loved toys as donations from the generous people of Greater Manchester. We then completely clean them using child safe methods. All our toys are tested to make sure they are of the highest quality and have no broken bits.
While most of our toys are pre-loved, we also have a small monthly budget to buy new toys if there is a hot toy on the market or if you require a more specialist toy such as for a disability.
For the funded tier of our service, you will need a referral from one of our partner organisations or you can refer yourself here, as long as you meet our eligibility criteria.
Once we have had your referral we will get in contact with you to find out more about you and your child, so we can match you with toys that will suit their age, interests and development. You get minimum £20 (RRP) worth of toys each month. You can pick your toys up from one of our pick up points or a volunteer will deliver them to you if needed.
Paying customers will choose a subscription level (£5, 10 or £15) and be allocated toy tokens that they will be able to spend on toys in our catalogue – more info coming soon!
At the end of each month you can either renew your toys for another month or send them back to us to swap them for some different ones. Funded customers will be part of our trial initially for 6 months, after which they can either sign up as a paid customer or make a donation against the value of the toy you have last to be able to keep it forever. We’ll ask funded customers to complete a questionnaire to tell us what they thought of the service.
Paying customers will be able to keep the swap & play cycle going as long as they want – with the option to pay to keep the toy they love the most after 5 months.
If toys get damaged or broken, they are repaired or used for spares at one of our partner organisations.
If toys can’t be fixed or passed on they will be taken apart and recycled responsibly.
Any swapped toys will be quality checked, cleaned and offered out to families again!
